On February 7, 2025, the parking lot of Catalina High School in Tucson, Arizona was abuzz with anticipation as over 140 high school students gathered to showcase their skills in the Arizona Builders Alliance’s SkillsUSA competition. This event highlighted not just individual talent, but also the growing demand for skilled workers in the construction industry, which continues to face significant labor shortages.

The Arizona Builders Alliance (ABA), representing nearly 400 member firms, has been instrumental in organizing this event since 2019. According to Kim Davids, the CEO of ABA, this competition represents more than just a series of contests; it serves as a valuable opportunity for youth to connect with industry professionals. “It’s a great opportunity for youth and teachers to integrate with our member companies and get excited about a potential career in construction,” explained Davids.
From Classroom to Competition
The SkillsUSA competition is framed within the broader context of national and regional workforce development initiatives. Students from various technical schools, as well as passionate individuals eager to learn trades, competed in categories including carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and electrical work. Judges, comprised of local contractors, evaluated the students’ performances, providing them with insights into the professional world they aspire to enter.
