NC Communications: A 25-Year Legacy in Telecom
Founded in the 1990s, NC Communications began its journey with a simple vision: to deliver reliable wiring solutions. Co-owned by Kristopher and Nicole Kornegay, what started with two men and a truck has transformed into a thriving business with over 70 employees and substantial municipal contracts.
From Humble Beginnings to Industry Recognition
Kristopher, influenced by his father, James Kornegay, who founded Electronic Equipment Analyzers in the 1970s, learned the basics of the trade from a young age. “I’ve done this my whole life,” Kristopher recalls, showcasing the deep-rooted connection his family has with the telecom industry. Today, their impressive work has positioned them as finalists for Equipment World’s 2025 Contractor of the Year award.
The Road to Success
After stepping out to start NC Communications with an $88,000 contract from the University of North Carolina, Kristopher’s journey wasn’t without challenges. Utilizing his expertise and a small crew, he managed to secure long-term contracts, including with N.C. State University, which provided a steady income during economically tough times.
Embracing Change: The Role of Immigrant Workers
The arrival of immigrant workers was a turning point for NC Communications. Hiring employees like Ephrain Rangel, who emigrated from Mexico, brought vital skills and resilience to the underground division as they expanded their offerings. Kornegay noted Rangel’s exceptional work ethic as instrumental in taking the company’s underground operations to new heights.
Overcoming Financial Struggles
Like many businesses, NC Communications faced its share of obstacles during the housing crisis. Instead of layoffs, the Kornegays demonstrated exceptional leadership by holding back their own paychecks and supporting their staff. Nicole spearheaded a financially conservative approach that helped the company recover, eliminating reliance on factoring companies within a year.
Future Forward: Plans for Growth
NC Communications’ prosperous outdoor telecom division, generating $3.5 million in 2024, is set for expansion. As fiber optics take center stage in the telecommunications landscape, the Kornegays are eager to diversify their offerings to include potential electrical work. Kristopher emphasizes, “If you're not moving ahead, then you're moving backwards,” signifying their commitment to continual growth.
Building Long-Term Relationships
NC Communications' enduring relationships have been pivotal during tough times. Their ongoing work with the North Carolina Department of Information Technology during the pandemic underscores the significant role they play in the community’s infrastructure. Kristopher remarked, “Our customer base was designed well for this scenario,” highlighting the adaptability and necessity of their services.
Conclusion: A Legacy Built on Resilience
The Kornegays’ dedication to their craft, combined with a commitment to community connection, serves as a blueprint for success in the ever-evolving telecommunications industry.
